To leave an area of soil that has been prepared, or partly prepared, especially for seeding but also for turfing, idle for a period of time, particularly from late spring to summer. This allows for weed seeds to germinate and then be controlled before the soil is finally prepared for the receipt of grass seed, or turf. This activity reduces the chance of further weed seed germination and competition for valuable resources, which are now all available to the desirable turfgrasses.
