Whilst the UK weather is quite variable there is often a short period of up to a few weeks, typically from mid-February to early March, when warmer air temperatures produce a short burst of grass growth. This is temporary, and growth is frequently impeded just afterwards as cooler air temperatures, as well as frozen conditions and sometimes snow, return. Good strong natural spring growth doesn't start occurring until at least 10ËšC is reached, so this will be late March at the earliest in many cases. Caution is needed so as not to apply a significant spring fertiliser during a false spring. If it is applied, this will produce artificially forced soft growth which is more susceptible to wear and also disease attack.
