An common weed of turf surfaces, often being confused for a grass plant. Its scientific name is Luzula campestris. It is a Perennial, with sort rhizomes, with grass like leaves, and with silvery-white hairs present. It does not have a ligule. The main flowering period is March to May, with brown flower heads. Its soil preferences are as follows: Soil pH: Usually growing in slightly acidic soils of around pH 6.5 to slightly alkaline soils, preferring more infertile soils. Soil Texture preference is for sandier soils, but will grow on a range of soils, including clay loam, and also if there is a deficiency of humus. Soil Moisture preference is for dry soils but will also grow in moist ones. Other features include: 1. It does not like shade, preferring an open situation, but will survive in light dappled shaded situations. 2. Typical growing locations are most turf situations, especially finer turf and low maintenance amenity turf conditions.
