The planned and controlled application of water to a surface.

Water can be applied through a range of different items of equipment, ranging from a watering can, hose pipe, static sprinkler, self-travelling sprinkler, or automatic pop-up sprinkler.

Irrigation might be carried out for a number of reasons, including to:
• Prevent the grass plant from dying.
• Help to wash in any applied fertiliser.
• Encourage grass seed germination.
• Maintain a stable surface on very sandy rootzones.
• Speed up the pace of a football on the surface of a pitch.
• Reduce the hardness of a pitch, especially a football or rugby pitch which has a reinforced surface.

It is also often referred to as Watering.
