This relates to the Basic Principles of Greenkeeping and involves the minimal use of fertiliser and water in the maintenance of a golf or bowling green.

This concept also includes ensuring that the height of cut on a mower is not routinely set below the traditional 3/16inch (5mm), unless for exceptional circumstances such as for an elite tournament, and only then for a short period of time.

The main reason for maintaining a height of cut around this level is that the grass would be excessively stressed if much lower, particularly considering that fertiliser and water inputs would not be adequate to help maintain a suitable surface at the lower cut heights.
