Determining what is a safe grass surface will depend upon the location and use of the surface.

However, for a turfgrass surface used for sporting activities, some of the following features would need to be considered:

• It is in good repair, such as having a good grass cover.

• There are no erratic or abrupt changes in the surface levels.

• The surface itself is even and relatively smooth.

• It has appropriate drainage, with no standing water.

• Traction is good, reducing the chance of players losing their grip and slipping.

• A firm surface is provided – being neither too hard nor too soft.

• The surface is consistent in response to player and ball interaction over its entire area – it is neither too fast nor too slow.

• There are no contaminants on the surface; these would include stones, glass, debris, dog faeces, etc.

• The line markings are clearly visible and to the correct dimensions.

• All posts and netting are secured and undamaged.

• Any perimeter barriers are located at a safe distance and will not cause injury if a player ran into them.
