The provision of adequate training, instruction and supervision in the use of any item of equipment. This will ensure that

• equipment is properly inspected, checked and prepared prior to use, (see Pre-Start Checks),

• appropriate PPE is worn,

• the user can readily identify any potential problems arising from its use and resolve this before any harm is done,

• the equipment is used correctly and safely, reducing wear and tear on it, and eliminating or minimising any risk from its use,

• precautions are taken to protect others, including putting up warning signs to indicate machinery is being used in the area, or to create an ‘exclusion zone’, preventing access to members of the public and others not authorised to be in the area whilst equipment is being used,

• the user works at an appropriate pace to ensure they do not become unduly tired which would increase the risk of an accident happening: the aim is to maintain an efficient and effective use of equipment throughout a working period or day,

• the need to stay alert at all times and be aware of the user’s surroundings is an important aspect of the safe use of equipment,

• the equipment is used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions,

• the user will have an understanding of what a correctly functioning item of equipment sounds like when in use, especially an engine powered one,

• the user will observe, as part of an ongoing process whilst using an item of equipment, the results of their work output and also reflect on the effectiveness and quality of the work being achieved. This will help feedback into determining, for example, whether any settings need adjusting or whether ground conditions are unsuitable for work to continue,

• the equipment is appropriately cleaned and stored after use, helping to maintain the lifespan of the equipment.
