Open Discussion

An idea generation and problem-solving technique which is similar to collaboration / working group, but an open discussion could take the form of one person playing ‘devil’s advocate’ to identify limitations or problems with ideas.

This type of approach may only work well where the individuals or team trust and respect each other. Where this doesn’t exist then this particular type of open discussion can often lead to conflict.

By contrast, open discussion can be focussed on generating ideas which can then be further explored to identify a solution. Open discussion can often be considered a form of professional discussion, especially where the problem is work-based and individuals involved work in the same occupational area.
