This is a student undertaking self-determined learning, with a student deciding what is best for them to learn, how they learn and how they utilise available resources.

Modern web-based technologies are especially relevant to facilitating the requirements of a heutagogical learner. They will be more of a reflective learner than someone being taught via the andragogy approach.

The teacher is effectively there as a supporting guide, providing less control and a more fluid course structure than would be present in the self-directed approach of andragogy.

Learners will have the full confidence to explore and develop their own competencies and capabilities, so this approach may not be appropriate for learners who are somewhat reluctant or reticent to develop their own vision of learning.

The skills and knowledge gained, and the process of learning encourages and enable the learner to more readily adapt to new experiences, to develop their capability, which is beyond that of just being competent in an activity.
