In the first instance it is essential that correct identification is carried out to confirm that it is an undesirable organism, and if so which particular one.

Make a decision on what to do, or if you are not responsible for making the decision then inform the relevant person, for example, the grounds manager. The initial decision will typically be one of the following:
• Does it need immediate control or treatment?
• Monitor the situation.
• Record the situation and take no action.
• Take no action.

If the situation is to be monitored then decide on the plan of action: It might just be to ‘keep an eye on the situation', or may involve a more formal assessment, either observation or physical measurements. Determine the frequency of monitoring as well.

If control or treatment is needed, then determine the most appropriate course of action: this might be physical, cultural or chemical control. If the latter than the Safe Use of Pesticides must be followed.
