Five Core Principles of Sustainability

A systems approach with five interconnected and interdependent domains consisting of numerous factors, but with each having a core principle of sustainability which must be satisfied if the system is to be considered as sustainable. The domains and principles are:
• Material: Resources, including energy, to be non-declining.
• Economic: To account for and internalise environmental costs of production and service.
• Life: Responsibilities and actions for maintaining biodiversity.
• Social: Maximise health, well-being and development of individuals.
• Spiritual: Values and ethics to deliver harmonious relationships between humans, other living organisms and the environment.
Sustainability in the above context is defined as “A dynamic equilibrium in the process of interaction between a population and the carrying capacity of its environment such that the population develops to express its full potential without producing irreversible adverse effects on the carrying capacity of the environment upon which it depends”.
