Numerous actions can be undertaken to help address a gap that might exist in the motivation of a worker. The most relevant actions will depend on the individual needs of a worker, but examples can include the following:
• Discuss how a suitable work-life balance can be encouraged and implemented.
• Ensure that a supportive team environment is nurtured, balancing openness, inclusivity and respect, with empathy and confidentiality.
• Provide appropriate praise, encouragement, rewards, bonus incentives, as well as progression and development opportunities.
• Ensure a positive and welcoming environment is promoted at all times as this can have a significant effect on mood swings and well-being.
• Provide opportunities for workers to take greater responsibility for decision making, as well as allowing for greater autonomy of working where appropriate.
• Involve individuals in actively setting and monitoring their own personal development goals, ensuring that adequate resources and support is available and that managers are actively involved in helping to progress the goals.
• Ensure operational work goals are SMART, otherwise unachievable and unrealistic goals will continue to demotivate a worker and their team.
• Ensure regular, constructive, feedback is provided, in a non-threatening way, to help improve the motivation of a worker.
• Hold regular one-to-one meetings which help encourage and support an individual in achieving their goals and to address any concerns they may have.
• The line manager is to lead by example, being positive, showing interest in others, a good listener, empathetic, trust worthy, honest and treat comments and concerns of an individual in confidence.
