For many clubs, especially those maintained by volunteers with a limited range of machinery, the use of a contractor to carry out the complete range of end of season renovations is the most appropriate option.

The costs of a complete pitch renovation will vary depending on many factors, not least how far the contractor has to travel to site as well as whether more than one pitch is being renovated.

As a general guide a cost for 2024 might be in the region of £5,500 to £6,500 per pitch. This would include deep spiking, scarification, selective herbicide application, fertiliser application, top-dressing (including working it into the sward) and overseeding.

This would also include provision of all the materials as well, for example, 60 tonnes of sand, 8 - 12 bags of grass seed, 10 - 12 bags of fertiliser.

A typical timescale, for a single pitch, for all activities to be completed might be estimated as taking 2.5 to 3 days. Depending on the quantity of materials applied a general guide for a low to high range might therefore be from £4,000 to £8,000 per pitch.

For clubs utilising contractors it is important to get several quotes against an identical requirements specification, selecting one based not just on cost-effectiveness, but also timeliness, reliability, and quality of outcomes.
