Hard Porous Pitch Maintenance: 06. Brushing / Drag-matting

The most common task was to drag brush and/or drag-mat the entire area to help to redistribute loose material.

A drag mat would have been used where more material was needed to be redistributed back into hollows from disturbed areas. This would typically have been carried out on a on a daily basis where regular daily usage took place.

Brushing in two directions after scarifying was done to help finish the mixing process and to create an even surface. A light rolling would give the finishing touches to re-firm the surface ready for play.

Regular sweeping of the surface of fallen leaves during the autumn, where deciduous trees were prevalent, was an additional task which also needed to be planned for.

Localised brushing and / or luting to even out hollows with displaced material, would have also been a common task, but where this was not fully successful then additional top-dressing would have been added to achieve the desired surface evenness.
