Minor additions of top-dressing, which might be a depth of less than 5mm, would have been added to the surface and luted in.

However, where deeper and heavier applications were needed then the surface needed to be scoured by scarification beforehand to provide a suitable key on which the material could bind. If the surface was dry, then a light watering would have been given to aid tine penetration and the process of adequate incorporation of the material.

To complete any top-dressing work, a finishing touch of drag brushing the area in both directions would have been done.

Before applying top-dressing, it was important that the top-dressing was relatively dry to help with its ease of spreading. It was also important to make sure that the top-dressing had been turned over and remixed beforehand because the finer material would have typically settled towards the bottom of the bag or pile of hard porous.
