The application of salt to a hard porous surface was sometimes used to help with moisture retention during the drier summer months and to reduce the effects, to some degree, of frosts over wintertime, although its effectiveness could be quite variable during the winter.

Many ground staff found it was not a worthwhile exercise in applying salt.

Where salt was applied this would typically have been during April and October, with the surface being lightly tine raked beforehand.

The most important factor to have considered before any salt application was that of compatibility of salt with the specific hard porous material.

It was wise to always check with the manufacturer to determine what, if any, negative effect salt might have had on the specific hard porous material on a site.
