Bowling Green Maintenance: 38f. Minimal Resources and Low Club Membership

Scarification Another much under used activity and this is needed to cut into any thatch layer and gradually reduce it, and mainly to prevent further build-up of thatch.
This activity will be undertaken only when the grass plant is growing well so that any marking of the surface with scarification grooves will quickly heal over with grass growth. The depth of scarification will mostly be light to medium, although at the end of season renovation activity a deeper scarification will take place. For estimated timings, a light / medium / heavy scarification will be accomplished in 1¼ / 1½ / 2 hours respectively.

Verticut: This will help to keep the grass sward upright, act as a control for weeds (especially trailing weeds) and maintain a healthier surface by facilitating better air flow amongst the basal parts of the sward.
Considering that this activity takes about the same time as mowing the green when a dedicated cassette or unit is used, then it is prudent to just attach a metal tine groomer to the rear of the front roller of the mower, as this will work through the grass blades and lateral stems raising them up prior to being mown off as part of the mowing activity, without incurring any extra time.
Be careful when setting the depth of the tine into the sward to avoid tearing into a high spot or crest of a slight depression. The difference in adjustments might only be a few millimetres but correct settings are essential with little leeway for error if set slightly low.
