Trim green edge: This doesn’t take too long and for presentational purposes can make a basic green or lawn look quite nice, so this activity shouldn’t be neglected.

Using long handled shears this might take ¾-hour per occasion depending on the quantity of clippings to remove from the ditch.

Brushing: Attaching a nylon brush, which is typically located behind the front roller of a cylinder mower, will help to disperse drying earthworm casts and flick upright any flattened grass and weed stems producing a much cleaner cut. Once fitted this will not take any longer to cut a green than one without the attachment.

Dragbrushing / Switching: When dew or earthworm casts are present then the green should be dragbrushed or switched with a long cane to remove the dew and to disperse earthworm casts. The casts will often be smeared if dew is also present, so once the moist surface with casts has been dragbrushed or switched, it should be left to dry (assuming the weather allows this) and then dragbrushed or switched again to more fully disperse the smeared casts. The extent of earthworms will significantly affect the number of surface cast and potential for smearing, so if earthworm casts are present in very low concentrations, the suggested additional dragbrushing activity where mentioned may not actually be needed.

It is important to remove dew form a green early in the morning as this is an ideal environment in which turfgrass diseases can flourish. This should take place whether it is the playing season or outside of the playing season.

On mowing days, the green might be switched first, as this is a relatively speedy activity, allowed to dry for a while and then mown, with the brush attachment on the mower, thereby saving time by not having to use a dragbrush.

An action plan and schedule of what to do depending on the different permutations might be drawn, similar to the following:

By using a 2-metre wide drag brush, or long cane switch, the average time taken to cover a green and put the equipment away safely, might be about ½-hour. The actual number of occasions when these will be needed will vary according to ground and weather (primarily dew) conditions, so a guide of 100 instances is included in this scenario, so 50-hours as a general guide. With the elimination of pesticides, it will be important to carry out the physical action of dragbrushing and switching as a means of reducing the likelihood and then impacts of any pest and disease attacks.
