Sports surfaces, as well as amenity grass surfaces, require a range of equipment (i.e. hand tools, hand propelled, and mechanised ¯ pedestrian operated or sit-on) to maintain a surface to a desired standard. The actual complement, or kit, that will be available for any site or pitch can vary considerably, being significantly influenced by the available budget, which in some cases will be generous, but in many it will be frugal and limited. A useful starting point can be obtained by referring to the following equipment lists in this guide: • Bowling Green: Equipment List. • Cri

A key aim of this programme is to ensure the equipment performs at its best over its planned lifetime. An effective maintenance programme helps to reduce equipment breakdowns, malfunctions, erratic running, workplace injuries, poor productivity levels and sub-standard quality of finish from equipment use. Other benefits include maintaining the depreciation value of the equipment and potentially extending the working life of the equipment. All this adds up to equipment which works efficiently over an appropriate time span. Some limitations, or management considerations, from implementi

Doing the right thing, which may not necessarily be the right for, or fair to, you. Sometimes we have to do what is right even though we may disagree with it. There is not necessarily a right or wrong answer to many issues in life - often this will depend upon the current state of the society or the situation. We do need to think about the way we live and our actions. Ethics might be thought of what an impartial observer would make of an issue. The observer would need to think and reflect about the consequences of actions and give reasoned arguments for and against different actions and whe

Expert System advert image shown if present

Computerised system which utilises human expert knowledge (stored in a knowledge base), along with rules (such as IF, THEN, AND), to solve problems or to provide an indication of a likely solution. With the many variables involved in producing a suitable turfgrass surface and the strong or weak significance which may exist between many of the variables, the development of an effective expert system to help make better informed decisions is certainly a challenging prospect. Numerous decision trees could form the basis for a larger, integrated, expert system.

To leave an area of soil that has been prepared, or partly prepared, especially for seeding but also for turfing, idle for a period of time, particularly from late spring to summer. This allows for weed seeds to germinate and then be controlled before the soil is finally prepared for the receipt of grass seed, or turf. This activity reduces the chance of further weed seed germination and competition for valuable resources, which are now all available to the desirable turfgrasses.
