Banding

The creation of wide strips, typically 2-metres or more, of uniformly shaded grass due to the action of mowing or through the use of a drag brush, chain harrow, or similar tool.
Bar

A unit of pressure, but not an SI unit, being equivalent to about 14.5 psi, but often given as 15 psi for practical purposes. The pressure used for the majority of knapsack and boom sprayer nozzles for use on turfgrass surfaces will typically range from 1 to 3 bar, although the actual pressure used must follow nozzle and pesticide manufacturers guidelines.
Baseline [1]

The line marking at the end of each tennis court, form which players initially serve from.
Baseline [2]

The initial starting point from which decisions can start to be made. Typically, a range of data will be collected as a preliminary requirement prior to the start of an activity or project as this will help identify areas where additional data collection is required in supporting effective decision making. It is not uncommon for only a small or minimal quantity of relevant data to be available as part of a baseline.
Baseline Dates

The original dates for both the start and finish of a project. These can be used as a reference point to determine if a project is on course for completion on time or whether there is an overrun on completion.
Baseline Maintenance

A category of turf maintenance which categorises variables in a way that captures the general outcomes and returns from inputs to a sports turf surface. This category is what is needed to maintain a playing surface that is no longer in use, but which is likely to come back into play some time in the foreseeable future. Normally a surface has been taken out of use due to political, social or economic reasons, with an example from 2020 being the coronavirus COVID-19, which significantly affected all sports matches and surfaces. In essence it is being temporarily mothballed.

Basic Principles of Greenkeeping

This relates to the traditional grass species in a golf or bowling green of red fescue and browntop bentgrass, and not newer species which are sometimes used, such as creeping bentgrass. In addition, it should be considered that the soil type would mostly have been of a sandy loam / loamy sand and not the higher sand specification constructions of many modern greens.
The basic principles emphasise the following:
1. Apply fertiliser which encourages the long-term survival of the desired grass species:
• Nitrogen is the most important nutrient and the source should be acid reacting,

Batwing Mower

A ride on rotary mower with three mowing decks, two of which are located either side (on the wing) of the operator and can be raised using hydraulic operated side arms. The third mowing deck is located at the front of the mower. The raising of the two side decks represents the principles of the wings of a bat in motion. An example of this type of mower (in 2023) is the Ransomes MP653.
Bedding Display

A temporary floral display which might be located adjacent to a golf clubhouse, school entrance, leisure or sports facility buildings, or similar, will contain bedding plants. These can enhance the surrounding environment for sports players, spectators, students, employees and visitors. Bedding displays are designed to appear at their best at certain times of the year, being typically categorised as either spring (sometimes also referred to as winter-spring) or summer bedding.
A large display of a few species can provide for an impressive visual impact in an area which is subject to high

Best Management Practice (BMP)

The application of the most effective and efficient methods, at the current time, in managing turfgrass surfaces. A range of methods could all be considered 'best' at any one time because the measure of effectiveness can include a variable number of criteria depending upon interpretation and requirements. Often this is just called Best Practice or Best Working Practice.
