The physical raking of a turf surface to raise up basal vegetation and lateral grass growth, but not into the layer below the base of the grass. It can be considered a very light form of surface scarification carried out on finer turf areas. It should not be used to penetrate any underlying thatch layer and might be set 2mm below a height of cut on fine turf (in this instance it might typically be referred to as HOC -2mm) and up to 5mm on longer harder wearing swards. This is often carried out during the summer and when rain hasn't fallen for some time during the growing season. The main reason typically given by lawn owners for watering their lawns is for them to be kept green. This is not the best agronomic reason why they should be watered.

An item of equipment which is used for marking out using white liquid paint, or similar, material. The liquid material is held within a container in which a wheel rotates as the marker is pushed forward. This internal wheel picks up the liquid material and typically transfers it onto a dimple roller which then transfers it onto a front wheel roller which then makes the line. The process is known as Wheel Transfer.
