Module 4:

Materials

4.4 How much is needed?

4.4.4 Line marking / paint material

A 10-litre container of concentrated line marking paint is to be diluted at a rate of 1-part paint to 4-parts water prior to being used.

What is the total quantity of the mixed line marking paint that can be used from this container for marking out pitches?

With 1 part of concentrate being mixed with 4 parts of water the total diluted mixture has a volume of 5-litres.

With this total volume of 5-litres if diluted mixture can you now work out the total volume of diluted mixture from a 10-litre container of concentrate?

We have said that 1 litre of concentrate results in 5 litres of the diluted mixture.

If the container is 10 litres of concentrate then this is 10x greater than the 1 litre example. The water of 4 litres to help form the total mixture is also multiplied by 10; so 4 x 10 = 40 litres of water.

Add these two total values together to arrive at the total quantity of the mixed line marking paint that can be used from this container.

Can you now work out the total quantity that is required?

You have 10 litres of concentrate added to 40 litres of water. Therefore you arrive at a total quantity of 50 litres.

There can be another way to arrive at a correct answer, but hopefully the above approach has been clear

1   The main product types are:

  • Specialist paint (for example, Grassline Excel Concentrate 10L) for use in either line spraying equipment or wheel-to-wheel transfer line marking equipment.
  • Material (for example Snowcal 40 (25kg), which is finely powdered chalk) for diluting with water for use in wheel-to-wheel transfer line marking equipment.
  • General exterior white paint, available in many stores, for the painting of wood and metal work.

2   The application rates will vary according to the actual product, but the following is a general guide:

  • Grassline Excel Concentrate for overmarking is 1 part to up to 6 parts water.
  • Snowcal: 2kg of material in 1 litre of water.
