Module 4:

Materials

4.3 When are they used?

4.3.9 Other pesticides: fungicides; insecticides; bio-pesticides

1   Fungicides might be required at any time of the year when a particular disease attacks the grass or is likely to attack the grass. In practice though, the use of fungicides will usually only be required and limited to the higher quality and more intensively maintained pitches. The main reason for this is that the grass plant is often under significant stress on these pitches.

2   Insecticides that are used for the control of grubs will be applied at a certain life-cycle stage of the pest. This might be May / June and August to September (or October in the south), but for specific species and their relevant control periods times always follow the recommendation on the manufacturer’s product label.

3   Bio-pesticides: For leatherjackets (but depending on the specific insect species) this might be two periods: August and September (to October in the south), and around April time when soil temperatures are suitable and when young grubs will be more easily attacked by the control predators. For chafer grubs this might be mid-August to September (into mid-October for the south), but for specific species and their relevant control periods times always follow the recommendation on the manufacturer’s product label.
