The growing point for grasses is in a region called the crown. This is at the base of a stem and is where leaves and roots originate from. This location allows grass plants to be regularly cut short, or eaten by animals, and still grow and develop very well because it is usually well protected and below the mowing or eating height. If the crown is killed off then the plant will no longer function and will die off.
