8.2 Planning the usage schedule

8.2.1 Grass growth and regrowth in relation to planned usage

1   The following graphic illustrates the relative natural grass growth potential for a football pitch over a 12-month period.

Growth that takes place during the autumn and spring might allow for additional games to be played because regrowth following wear during these periods can help maintain good ground cover.

However, during the winter months, especially when combined with the relative higher soil moisture content of a pitch, this is the period when careful, or maybe a more appropriate term is assertive, pitch usage management is needed. This is especially important if pitch quality standards and pitch playing performance requirements are to be consistently maintained throughout the entire period.

2  The usage schedule will need to consider the likely carrying capacity of the pitch (which is significantly influenced by soil type, construction and drainage) and the desired quality grade that can realistically be achieved, on a consistent basis, for the type of pitch.
