4.3 When are they used?

4.3.5 Pesticide: Weedkiller (Herbicide)

A weedkiller applied to a pitch will only usually take place when the grass plant is growing quite strongly, so good soil temperatures and a suitable soil moisture content is ideally required. This helps the grass plant to be more competitive when compared with weakened and dying weeds, being able to more rapidly colonise areas left by the previous weeds.

April and especially May, and Mid-August to September are usually two good periods for applying a herbicide, although always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific herbicide.

June to early August might be too dry, especially where an irrigation system is not present or where it has only a limited capacity. Often it is too hot, with limited available water within the soil for good grass growth during these months. It is usually not a good idea to apply a herbicide when the grass plant is stressed.
