1   Let’s start off with a quick question.

Which one of the following materials is most likely, where incorrectly applied, to be contribute most to pollution?

2   We want to use materials safely and at the correct rates. This will reduce the likelihood of polluting the environment, reduce wasting money, provide optimum inputs to a pitch (having neither an excess or deficit) and also in some cases, especially where pesticides are concerned, ensures compliance with regulatory requirements.

We do not want to apply materials incorrectly because this can cause a range of problems depending on the type of material applied.

3   Pesticides in particular will often be the main material used in grounds management that could cause the most harm and damage, where it is used inappropriately or irresponsibly, through soil pollution, water pollution, kill off grass swards through over application, harm or kill surrounding plants, animals or insects, as well as harming humans, if contaminated from spray drift.

4   Misapplied fertilisers might also cause soil or water pollution. In addition, if irrigation water is over applied this can wash fertiliser through a soil profile or cause surface run-off. Misapplied fertilisers are more likely to kill off grass patches through scorching, or encourage unnecessary excessive growth, weeds and increase mowing requirements. Incorrect fertiliser application can also increase the conditions where a disease attack is more likely.

5   Making sure any materials are applied at the planned rate of application through correct calibration [i.e. making sure the settings are correct and the equipment delivers the correct rate – this might not occur if nozzles are blocked or damaged, or nozzle gaps are worn or incorrect] of spreader or sprayers is essential if material is not to be over nor under applied, but given at just the right rate. This helps to reduce waste, save on any unnecessary additional material costs, and makes sure the intended effect on the grass sward actually occurs.
