Module 7:

Responsible use of equipment and materials

7.5 Module summary & recall

7.5.1 Module summary

1   We have identified the need to be responsible in the use of equipment, machinery and materials for the maintenance of a football pitch.

A safe system of work is providing the core foundation of ensuring an organisation is not only complying with the law but is also looking after the health and safety interests of their employees and workers, especially if volunteers.

Ensuring safe practices can be carried out by a worker requires the creation of a risk assessment by the organisation maintaining the football pitch. The terms hazard and risk have been described, as well as the importance of wearing PPE where it has been identified as a required control feature.

A detailed walk through of the creation of a general risk assessment for the use of a ride-on mower / compact tractor with mower attachment has been provided. A wide range of potential hazards have been identified, along with the risk associated with those hazards. Potential controls have also been described to help either eliminate or reduce the likelihood of harm being realised.

2

We have emphasised the importance of ensuring that the person or persons carrying out a risk assessment are classed as competent. You have also carried out part of an initial risk assessment using the template provided.

The importance of storing equipment and materials safely and securely has also been described. Numerous other reasons than the often quoted need to comply with legislation and to prevent or reduce theft have been given.
