7.2.3 Risk assessment

1   What is a hazard?

This is anything that can harm or injure you or others when doing the activity you are checking as part of the risk assessment.

  Can you think of at least two things, when carrying out mowing using a ride-on or tractor operated rotary mower, which might be classed as a hazard?

2   What is a risk?

This estimates the likelihood of you, or someone else, getting hurt from what you are doing.

It is an estimate of the probability of harm or injury occurring from the activity.

Clearly, we would all want a positive outcome from carrying out work activities and do not want anyone to be injured.

3   Why wear PPE?

A risk assessment will help identify what PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is needed for each activity.

Wear what is identified because it will help protect you and reduce the chance of injury, which might otherwise occur from using equipment, as well as lifting and moving materials.

An employer must provide PPE to their employees and the employees must look after it and use it. This is especially important where it has been identified as a requirement of a risk assessment for any activity that they might be doing.

The typical core PPE kit for a groundskeeper might be considered as being safety boots / safety trainers; gloves; ear protection; and eye protection. Other PPE would be included where it has been identified from any risk assessment. For example, additional PPE would be needed if someone was involved with handling or using pesticides. To comply with regulations a volunteer using a pesticide at a grass roots club must also hold a certificate of competence prior to using any pesticide.
