5.1 Introduction
We have now identified a wide range of features and some performance standards of a desirable football pitch, the main activities that are typically carried out and also a range of typical materials that might be used in looking after a pitch.
What we can now do is to make a connection between all three groups, by identifying how they might influence pitch quality as well as playing experience.
Before we can explore this further, we do need to address one of the more common questions that arises in groundskeeping, and that is along the lines of ‘Why do I need to bother doing that maintenance activity?’.
Having an understanding of the impact and consequences of not doing something is another important part of being a good groundskeeper. We will look at this now.
