Module 5:

Making connections

5.3 Providing insight into activities

5.2.3 Applying fertiliser / biostimulants / soil conditioners / wetting agents

What is used?

Fertiliser; Biostimulants; Soil conditioners; Wetting agents. Water for dilution or dissolving of materials where required.

Distributor: Fuel for power unit, if not hand powered, using petrol, diesel, electric battery power.

Some reasons for applying a fertiliser

  1. To produce a hard-wearing surface.
  2. To create a dense sward, providing good ground coverage.
  3. To give a suitable, pleasing and uniform colour.
  4. To improve consistency of ball to surface (ball roll and ball bounce) and player to surface interactions, especially traction.

Some reasons for applying a biostimulant

  1. To reduce plant stress, whether for drought or cold conditions.
  2. To enhance root growth and development.
  3. To improve soil microbiology and availability of organic extracts for plants: This will often contribute to improved efficiency of nutrient uptake.
  4. To contribute to improving sward quality.

Some reasons for applying a soil conditioner

  1. To make the soil environment less desirable to some turfgrass pests and diseases.
  2. To improve nutrient availability.
  3. To improve soil structure, aeration and drainage.
  4. To improve consistency of ball response due to improved sward and rooting conditions.

Some reasons for applying a wetting agent

  1. To improve surface water infiltration rate.
  2. To reduce the effects of dry patch or water repellency.
  3. To aid water retention within a soil profile.
  4. To reduce the formation and retention of early morning dew.
