Module 5:

Making connections

5.4 Influencing pitch quality

5.4.3 Analysis of our suggestions

1   If we group our suggestions, we find the 19 maintenance activities contribute the following towards influencing live ground cover:

  • Very significant = 7 activities.
  • Significant = 6 activities.
  • Some = 4 activities.
  • Negligible = 0 activities.
  • None = 2 activities.

This can sometimes be better presented as a visual image as follows:

Number of activities and their estimated influence on activities

If the pie chart is redrawn to represent the total of the weightings given for the influence of each maintenance activity on the performance standard, then 7 maintenance activities (which is 37% of the total 19 activities) have a 62% influence on the performance standard of Live Ground Cover.

2   Here’s the pie chart with activities represented as percentages.

Number of activities and their estimated influence as a percentage of the totals

Interestingly, the activity of Rolling / Firming is categorised as having a very significant influence; the reason being that it has a very negative influence on this performance standard. So, this is an instance where the maintenance activity would most likely be wanting to be reduced or eliminated, rather than increased or have an improved application of practice.

One key benefit of thinking about the influence maintenance activities might have on performance standards is that of prioritising those activities which have the most impact.

You should now have a good understanding of football pitch maintenance to be able to identify and change work behaviours that can improve the outcomes of your performance standards.

We have now covered all the practical aspects of groundskeeping, so it is time to take a look at some aspects of turf science to provide some more answers to the how’s, what’s and why’s of groundskeeping.

For now, congratulations on completing this Module 5. We will now have a brief summary of the module before attempting the recall section.
