This should be carried out whenever a game or training session is to take place. The pitch needs to be checked to ensure it is safe for play to take place, and this can only be confirmed with a safety check prior to use. A pitch safety check might be carried out by groundstaff and/or club manager / coach (especially if it is a training session without a referee), but according to the Football Association’s Pitch Inspection Guidance it is the responsibility of a referee to ensure the pitch is safe for play.
