5.2.15 Raking / Scarifying

Inadequate raking of a surface with metal-tines, especially when mechanical scarification is not carried out, can often result in which one of the following?

There might be more surface decaying / dead material, often with a build-up of a thatch layer. Grass will be less upright, with an increase in weeds that spread by lateral growth.

The pitch will wear more quickly; the sward will be thinner; there can be an increase in likelihood of disease attack. If missed out at renovation time this can reduce the effectiveness of other activities in the renovation process.
