5.2.16 Rolling / Firming

A pitch that is inadequately firmed will often produce which one of the following?

The pitch may be too soft, without good root binding with the rootzone, especially following pitch renovation. Over time though the regular use of various machinery will contribute to adequate consolidation of the rootzone.

There might be slight surface bumpiness. Some special comments are given for rolling later on in this module because it is the one activity that is not typically needed as a specific task. Rather it is undertaken more as a secondary activity through the use of a roller on a cylinder mower, or on rotary mower decks.
