Applying top-dressing

The pitch would not be as even as it could be, the ball will bobble rather than run truer, players may stumble, there could be more weeds and undesirable grasses.

The opportunity to provide a dry surface layer is denied and earthworm casting, where present, can be much more problematic and affect playing quality and other maintenance activities. Over time depressions may appear which collect water following rainfall.

This is critical where expensive secondary drainage has been installed because the viability of the slits can be lost within one or two years; this can result in a poorly drained and often an unplayable pitch for much of the season.
