Module 5:

Making connections

5.2 Not doing an activity

5.2.7 Drag matting or Chain harrowing (smooth side down)

Chain-harrowing with the smooth side downwards, or drag matting, might be carried out where drag-brushing is not done. If none of these activities are carried out, especially during autumn and early spring, then what is the most likely outcome for some pitches on a medium to heavy soil?

Drag matting

Where drag brushing is not carried out then earthworm casting can build-up making the surface less playable. In addition, the pitch will not be as well presented outside of the mowing season because it isn’t striped or banded.

One benefit of a chain harrow over a drag brush, or a drag mat, is that the arrangement of the metal chain links do not clog up like the nylon bristles on a drag brush, or the smaller spaces with a drag mat.
