5.3.15 Raking / Scarifying

What is used?

Scarifier, or similar.

Fuel for power unit (typically diesel or petrol).

Which one of the following options is the most significant reason for scarifying a pitch?

Raking

Some reasons for raking / scarification

  1. To remove thatch or undesirable organic matter within a rootzone, reducing the likelihood of a soft surface. (Scarification only)
  2. To keep the base of the sward clear of decaying organic matter, improving overall health particularly with improved air flow between the basal sheaths and leaves.
  3. To help stand up flattened / horizontal grass or creeping weeds, especially prior to mowing, helping to create a more uniform sward.
  4. To improve consistency of ball to surface interactions, as well as improving traction for players.
