5.3.19 Watering / Irrigation

What is used?

Sprinklers, Irrigation system, or hand hose for localised areas.

Water.

Which one of the following options is the most significant reason for watering a pitch?

Irrigation

Some reasons for watering

  1. To maintain plant health, especially for ground cover and colour.
  2. To maintain a hard-wearing sward, able to satisfy match demands.
  3. To encourage deeper rooting of grasses, where appropriate irrigation takes place.
  4. To ensure the surface is not too hard for players. This will ensure the pitch is safe to play on when weather and/or ground conditions negatively impact on surface hardness, which means primarily when the soil / rootzone is getting too dry.
