Module 5:

Making connections

5.3 Providing insight into activities

5.3.7 Drag matting or Chain harrowing (smooth side down)

What is used?

Drag mat or Chain harrow attachment to power unit.

Fuel for power unit.

Which one of the following options is the most significant reason for using a chain harrow with its smooth side pointing downwards, or a drag mat, on a pitch?

Drag matting

Some reasons for chain harrowing or drag matting

  1. To tidy up a surface following a game, removing displaced turf and smoothing the surface. This helps in subsequent post-match pitch repair work.
  2. To disperse earthworm casts (without clogging up nylon bristles as can occur with a drag brush), producing a smoother surface. Be careful when using a drag mat where earthworm casting is heavy as this can also clog up the drag mat.
  3. To disperse surface moisture (dew).
  4. To stripe a pitch, especially if a drag brush is not available, or when mowing is not carried out.
