Module 5:

Making connections

5.3 Providing insight into activities

5.3.8 Chain harrowing - Tines down

What is used?

Chain harrow attachment to power unit.

Fuel for power unit.

Which one of the following options is the most significant reason for using a chain harrow with its tines pointing downwards on a pitch?

Chain harrow

Some reasons for chain harrowing with tines downwards

  1. To cultivate the pitch surface in a basic and cheap way, when using longer tines, especially where other equipment is not available.
  2. To tear out loose or weak grass and trailing weeds (tine side down); so basically a coarse type of surface scarification when using shallow tines, contributing to a more uniform sward.
  3. Prior to periodic divoting to create a slightly disturbed surface in which desirable grasses might be sown to aid increasing their content within a pitch.
  4. To provide the basis for a denser sward, assuming oversowing / divoting with suitable grass seed follows this activity.
